There were two primary goals I had for this table. First, I wanted to design a piece with multiple curves, from the arched aprons to the sabre legs and the slightly “boat-shaped” ends. The relationships of the arcs were mocked up in plywood and cardboard before I began cutting the cherry. The top is 1 1/4 inches thick for mass and stability, but has a taper planed around the perimeter to create a visual sense of lightness.
The second goal? One Sunday morning, I was informed that I needed to build a table wide enough that two of us could read the Boston Globe without banging into each other. No problem, coming right up.
